What you need to know about backbone for fiber optic networks.

What does the backbone do?

Backbone is the "backbone" of the internet. The term is used to define the infrastructure that enables the exchange of information between servers over long distances. It controls the central connection scheme of a more comprehensive, high-performance system.

Within this infrastructure, an entire communication ecosystem operates, connecting computers worldwide. The backbone is a main network through which data from each internet user travels, responsible for data exchange between servers located in Brazil or abroad.

Thousands of kilometers of fiber optic cable ensure the rapid transmission of information, and this speed is enhanced by two infrastructure configurations: the division of the large backbone into several smaller networks, and redundancy, transmitting the same message through different paths, seeking shortcuts and avoiding transmission errors. Without the backbone, internet access in many of the environments where we use it, with its speed of traffic and transmission, would likely be difficult.

The advantages of backbone for ISPs

Understanding backbone infrastructure can greatly help a growing provider.

Some of the benefits of using a well-structured backbone are:

High durability of the structure

Networks like these are designed to require infrequent maintenance, with an average lifespan of ten years. As a result, maintenance costs are reduced, and the network becomes safer and more efficient. Due to its distributed nature, the system can also prevent potential power outages and other complications. And you can save costs when carrying out new network installations.

Divide and conquer

Using a backbone-like structure to interconnect the network offers greater potential for scalability and expansion of this infrastructure;

Safe and optimized maintenance.

You can add and remove devices without affecting the operation of others. In other words, the entire network can be updated consistently without needing to be deactivated.

More fluid data flow and greater network reach.

Since the infrastructure connects network devices, the backbone allows devices that are far apart to be connected. In this way, the network's reach is unlimited, making it possible to connect from one office to the entire country.

Support for new technologies

Another advantage of using a backbone is the high speed provided by the network. Due to its structure designed for scalability and durability, this type of cabling is engineered to support technologies that are better than those currently available on the market, in order to upgrade the entire infrastructure as new technologies emerge.

The path for expanding providers

The use of a backbone is of great importance for expanding and maintaining connectivity. As we saw above, the benefits are reflected in security, stability, performance, and maintenance. This solution is responsible for communication between all network elements and transfers information between access points and local and remote servers.

To maintain organization and have complete control of your network, in addition to a well-structured backbone, documentation is fundamental. One of the best solutions with support for mapping access and backbone networks, based on a hierarchical structure, is OZmap.

Some of the largest structures in the country already use the software.
